Go north.

The North Shore has lots of forests and mountains.

The North Shore will feel like a shorter version of the Catskills. There are good hikes around Eagle Mountain. We have forests throughout the state, but again, the North Shore has the best ones. All about 3-4 hours from Minneapolis.

No mountains, especially in comparing to upstate New York. The north shore has one I think, it's pretty hilly up there in addition to the mountain. The twin cities isn't flat like most of the Midwest is, there is hilly terrain throughout the twin cities especially the southwestern metro.

There is a taste of mountains along the St. Croix River Valley, Afton=ski resort area, Red Wing, reminds me of the Ozarks in Missouri, Arkansas area. It's mostly in the southeastern Minnesota, small part of Iowa, and Wisconsin. It's referred to as the Driftless area, which is a geological term.

The north shore, Duluth, on Lake Superior is very hilly too.

But no true mountains here. Lots of rolling hills, totally flat areas not that common.

I grew up in the Mohawk Valley, but have lived in the Twin Cities for 25 years. A lot of northern Minnesota is like the western side of the Adirondacks - think Old Forge and that will give you a good idea of Minnesota's north woods. The area that reminds me the most of upstate NY besides the northern MN is the bluff country along the Mississippi downstream from St Paul. The hills start in earnest around Red Wing which is about an hour from Minneapolis and continue down in to Iowa. I do a lot of photography so these are all photos I've taken.

There are also some good forests within the Twin Cities. There are enough of them that some are empty to the point where you feel like you are outside of the city, especially in the parks along the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers. These photos are from Pike Island at Fort Snelling State Park which is in the heart of the cities:

This is the St Croix River from Taylors Falls which is an eastern exurb of St Paul:

We also have this 8 hours away in South Dakota - there is nothing like it out east. The Twin Cities are far enough west that you can road trip to the real west:

Drewcifer , beautiful pictures. I had forgotten about the wildlife area by the Ft. Snelling. If been years since I've gone there. I remember it seems you are out in the middle of a huge forest until the plane comes by to land at the MPLS.ST.PAUL Airport...

OP, This nature area is literally next to the main terminal in the of the Minneapolis St Paul Airport. Minnesota is proud of their many regional, county and state parks. There is no shortage of places to be outside "in nature".

There are many smaller hidden gems in my area. I literally grew up 2 miles from this place and 10 years ago "discovered it"
