We are about to visit MSP to check out different neighborhoods for a possible relocation from Colorado. My husband is an architect and I am an entrepreneur....we are looking for a creative area that is within bikeable/walking distance to things, restaurants, cool people. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Also the area around the downtown riverfront, specifically on the east bank near east Hennepin and Central Avenue and Main Street

Uptown St Paul? You mean Upper Landing, right? (OP, if he didn't, consider Upper Landing also.)

Also, the St Paul Artists District (I think that's what the planning department calls it). It is centered on University & Raymond Aves.

That would be St. Anthony Main.

No, I meant the area along and around Grand Avenue

Check out Whittier, it might be your best fit.

Lyn-Lake would be a good option, too. (revolves around the intersection of Lyndale and Lake, and technically includes part of Whittier, and, depending on definition, overlaps with Uptown.)

What neighborhoods are in Uptown? When I do a real estate search I can't find "Uptown" for neighborhoods...?

Lake & Hennepin. Stretches east up to Dupont (past that it gets sketchy), north to around Franklin then it starts hitting downtown, west to the lakes and south to about 36th. South is generally bedroom community, the lakes area is higher income with turn of the century mansions around Lake of the Isles, north as it merges into downtown is low/middle class with a lot of rentals but very safe, and east becomes sketchy but a lot of areas that were bad are improving, although crime is not a big problem generally. I haven't spent a lot of time in that area since my 20's so others may come in and stomp all over what I said.

Downside is there are a lot of unemployed architects around here. I don't think anyone's hiring but you can pick up spot jobs mostly doing conversions (this is based on a couple NPR stories, no personal knowledge).
