I guess that's part of what makes it a college town by definition?
Yeah I agree, the only time I've really been there is when I was at a friends house. It's apart of the St. Cloud school district so I met some friends from St. Joe and have visited them before. But other then that, other then just driving through less then 5 times in 3 years, those are the only times I've been there.

And I was just in St paul visiting St Paul College a few days ago, and I also saw Concordia, St. Thomas, St. Kates, and Macalester. So I suppose one could argue St. Paul is part college town. Obviously not a pure college town because there is obviously lots of companies and employment and downtown, etc. there as well.

I suppose though then you could say the same of any major city too...

Mankato has its own flavor. I don't get any Twin Cities vibe at all when I visit family there. And half an hour is not to suburbs. Very distant exurbs at best Following 169, the first real suburb you would run into is Shakopee. Google Maps has that 57 miles away (following the speed limit, that's over an hour away).

You don't consider Belle Plaine and Jordan suburbs?

Jordan isn't a suburb unless things have expanded a lot more than I thought ... it's always been more a small town just outside the exurb range, and it isn't really connected to the Twin Cities except via 169.

Belle Plaine is even further south.

Mankato is 45 miles south of Jordan according to the sign on 169. The speed limit on 169 is 65 mph so that will take you about 40 minutes or so to get to Mankato from Jordan.

I myself have never thought of them as suburbs., just towns that happen to be fairly close to the Twin Cities. I've also never thought of places like Cologne and Norwood Young America as suburbs either.

No. Not in the slightest. They're very distant exurbs at best. And I'm willing to bet that they don't identify with the Twin Cities at all. I don't think you're really in the suburbs until you really hit Shakopee, and that's fairly far from the core as well.
