In late November a company started construction on two cabins near me, and the guys are still outside working in this weather. I've walked by a few times and they always seem to be trying to tarp down something. I feel so sorry for those guys - no amount of money would be worth working outside in this weather, I can't believe they keep on going.

And this is my first winter on propane. OMG is it expensive!

If you wanna hang out you've got to take her out; Propane.
If you wanna get down, down on the ground; Propane.

Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back; Propane.

Why don't you go and see?

Never mind - I'll do it for you.

And, contrary to your assertion, Douglas repeatedly makes it very clear that trends, not single data-points, are evidence of climate change.

...."extreme minimum temps "...........don't mean a thing.

If a month has 2 days with temps dipping to -25, is that colder if the next year that month has 10 nights of... only ..... -21 ?

When I grew up in MN in the 80's, 90's, the temps were closer to the month of this DEC than they were the past few years. Even when I went back to MN in mid 2000's, it wasn't super cold.

There was a cold snap in 96 that was worse than this one, and one in 94 that was pretty close. Usually, though, it's around 20F at this time of year.

If you think they mean nothing, then quit demanding to know what Paul Douglas would say about them as if they somehow disproved climate change.

Aside from that, the extreme minimum temps (like the extreme maximum temps) will generally track a consistent (loess regressed, of course) distance from the mean. So, yes, in fact they do mean 'a thing'.

I remember that. On February 2, 1996 (I remember because it was my 27th birthday), Tower hit -60F, Minnesota's all-time low. The high in the Twin Cities that day was -17F. Governor Carlson closed the schools statewide (as he did on one date during the '94 cold snap).

1983 was one of the worst Decembers I can remember.
Lots of records were set that year in central MN.

However, I don't think it lasted quite as long as this stretch.

It lasted from about Dec 18-Dec 28

When going through the Grand Forks ND coldest Decembers....and winters for that matter....the years that stuck out (more recent) was 1983, 1994, 1996, 2000. Weather tends to be cyclic in nature....a rought stretch of winters in mid 1990s...that cold 1996 followed by the incredible snowstorm winter of 96-97 in western/northwestern MN.... but a cold late 2000....but overall pretty quiet winters through much of the 2000s until heavier snowfalls in our area in 2008, 2009, 2010

In my visits to see family in Minnesota, in the winter I see very few people with a hat or gloves at the bus stop, even when it is below zero and windy. Few Minnesota folks really dress for the cold so they think it is even colder than it is.

Why don't they wear a warm coat when it gets below ZERO?
