We just moved to St.Paul from Vancouver, BC and need to buy winter coats. I was wondering when the stores have the biggest selection of jackets. We went looking this weekend, but were not able to find many. When and where is a good place to look? We need to buy both a men's coat and a women's plus size jacket.

Thanks!

Most stores won't have their full selection of winter coats out for a few more weeks. JC Penney usually has a large selection of casual winter coats, Columbia usually. Places like REI and other large sporting goods stores also have a good selection. If you are looking for dress coats, Macy's at the Mall of America usually has a very large selection along with some in between coats--not casual, not dressy.

Also check out Burlington Coat Factory and Marshall's. You'll find reduced-priced clothing there and they may have some out-of-season stuff (unlike Target).

REI's scratch and dent sale is probably the best place to get a good coat at a good price. Sign up for alerts at their website. It's held about four times a year. There are three stores in the twincities and they all have them on the same weekend.

Lands End Inlet is another good place to find winter coats. Cheaper than buying from their catalogs. I bought a parka there a couple years ago that was being discontinued, for $59, originally about twice that price. Keeps me warm as toast! Don't skimp on a good coat, hat and gloves for making it through winter in MN. Not as "chilly damp" as it is in Vancouver, but the temperatures are a LOT lower than the Pacific coast.

Last winter I found some really good winter coats at Gander Mountain and the prices were low. Kind of surprised me. Definitely worth a look.

It's hard to beat the prices at JCP. They have the best prices on Columbia. However, I don't believe they carry North Face.
