I grew up in Columbus. I went to Columbus Public Schools. My sisters went to Columbus Public Schools. One just recently graduated from CHS as a matter of fact. I would not, under any circumstances, send my kids to Columbus Public Schools. Some will say it is a racial issue. I would agree. If your kids are not black, they will picked on, ridiculed, and intimidated for the color of their skin. Also, the sad fact of the matter is, some of the kids that attend Columbus Public Schools come from poor and broken homes. They have very little respect for themselves or others. That is not to say all kids at the schools are this way. Also, I am not knocking the teachers or administrators as they do the best they can. However, knowing what I went through and knowing what my little sister went through......I don't suggest it.

As for the town, it is a small southern town. It has a slow, laid back pace. Which isn't a bad thing. I always felt we were very welcoming to any new people while I lived there. I knew a few people who plugged right in. If you like sports, you can go to SEC games in Starkville or in Tuscaloosa(60 miles east). If you are an outdoorsman, the Tombigbee has excellent fishing and the deer hunting in the area is good.

I had to respond to the public school issue. I researched the area before sending my kids to what I thought was the right place for them. Columbus Public School seemed to be the place as it had the most challenging curriculum and a wide variety of electives. The teachers were outstanding and because of the education that my kids received they are now in college on scholarships and on the Dean's list. I fully believe that it was the right decision for us. I also found that there was a great group of parents who also have the same educational beliefs as I do. Everyone has an opinion and my advise to you would be do your own research as you know what is best for your children. Welcome to the South and best of luck in you and your family.
