I am an older female and I have a possible Job Opportunity in Cape Girardeau. I am wondering what the Social Culture is like there? Are neighbors friendly, and pleasant, overly nosy busybodies or distant and don't engage at all? I am friendly but an introvert so I like privacy.

What is the rent like compared to work wages?

What is the crime like compared to other Missouri cities.

Is it overly religious?

THBgunner would be the one to ask. He is from Southeast Missouri.

I'm not from that area of the state, but Cape Girardeau County is pretty conservative and is in the bible belt.

Cape Girardeau is also a college town so you got transplants from other areas there too like St. Louis and other states as well.

Missouri is in the bible belt. Just look at the state politics. Even in St. Louis while that part of the state is midwestern, many people still go to church there.

Based on your post you sound like you might be a liberal. I wouldn't recommend Southeast Missouri if you're a liberal. I'm not being mean but just saying that outside of Stl, KC and to an extent Columbia, Missouri is very conservative and as a liberal you wouldn't be too happy living outside the big 3 areas, especially southern Missouri.

I would stick to St. Louis county or Jackson County.

I don't think rent is too bad down there BUT wages in general in Missouri outside the major cities are pretty low. At least cost of living is very low in MO to make up for that.

Rent prices will be somewhat inflated near the university due to college students. There are crime issues, mainly south of William Street though. North of there is usually ok, and west of Kingshighway is usually ok as well. There are some really good people that live in that part of town, but it is rough.

I don't know about neighbors. I lived in the county so honestly I don't have the best feel of how some of the people in the city limits are. I would imagine you will have a mix of introverts and extroverts. I myself am an introvert, and I wouldn't look at Cape any different than any other town if I was inclined to move there. I don't like living in town though.

There are quite a few religious people. (It is the bible belt after all)

I live in Utah in a polygamist area. It's mostly Mormon here. I am liberal and new age minded spiritually. So it's important to me to be able to have my own beliefs and not feel pressure to conform. But of all the States I've applied to Missouri is the only one who has repeatedly answered with Job opportunities.

I am spiritual but not religious. I am from Utah State. Missouri seems to have a lot more opportunities than where I live in Utah. Cape Girardeau is not the only city I have an opportunity but the real estate looks cheap and it sees to have a rich interesting history. I am learning metal detecting and thought that would be a great city to have this hobby in. However, bible belt probably would get on my nerves.

Missouri is very evangelical and very Trumpian in most rural areas. Cape went for Trump 70%+ in the last election. You might want to dig deeper into it if living in a religious/conservative area isn't going to make you happy.

i can't speak with any direct knowledge or authority with regard to Cape, but I drive through there a couple times a year to my family farm, and as you arrive, you are met with abortion billboards and symbolic baby graveyards. It makes me not want to stop and I am middle of the road politically.

Thanks I definitely don't want to deal with all that.

LOL.

Driving on I44 I notice that too as soon as you get out of Stl county and head SW.

Some of the smaller counties in Missouri went 80 percent or higher from Trump!

You defiantly notice that transition zone of Midwest and southern as you travel SW on 44 when you leave stl county it's a gradual build up. The billboards like you mentioned is one thing you notice. I remember also seeing a Rush Limbaugh Billboard on I44 SW bound too when I went to Table Rock 5 years ago.

Here in Floriduh Trump only won by 1 percent. In Missouri it was about 18 percent. That tells you something.

There are more conservative areas in Missouri than SEMO. Southwest Missouri is the most right area of the state.
