Marshall Mo has Con-Agra which is Banquet Foods...a large employer. There is also a meat packing plant there. Good schools.
Boonville, MO has several factories there. Intertherm, Caterpillar. Also the Isle of Capri Casino is a large employer inthe area. There are smaller lakes available and the Lake of the Ozarks (53,000 acre lake) is about an hours drive away. Also good schools. Population 8,000
New Franklin, is three miles away. Population 1,100. Excellent schools
There are also other small towns close by but the main employer would be Boonville. Columbia, population 75,000 is just 23 miles away and is a major employer in the area. I myself commute there and have for 29 years. There are several lakes in the area for fishing. Small town school are better (safer) than the big town schools. New Franklin itself has a triple AAA rated school which is an excellent rating.
Housing costs are not bad. Housing runs $45,000 on up with the median being $110,000 to $160 for a new home. Older homes will run in the $70/$80,000 range. Fixer's will be less of course. Rental's run about $350 to $700 depending on number of rooms and age/location of the rental unit.
I would be happy to give you additional information of send you specific rental housing information if you would like. I am a new real estate agent (in addition to my University job). I am doing it for fun and for a retirement job so am certainly not cut-throat as I don't have to rely on the income.

Springfield and Monett....would be towns with factories and centrally located within driving distance of all the lakes systems with each about an 1.5 hours away....table rock lake, stockton lake, pomme de terre lake and lake of the ozarks. SW Missouri cost of living is good and lots to do. If you need anymore info just email me.

Look into Osage Beach, MO. It is pretty. Has factories. It is close to the Dam. Allows quick access to Jeff city, Springfield, & St. Louis. Most of these Missouri towns have a lot of city websites that list all the factory jobs in that area. In fact, I deliver to Lake of the Ozarks and Osage beach a lot. There are a whole string of small towns that run along hwy 54 and hwy 5 that are right on the lake. I deliver for a warehouse supplier that usually sells entire households of furniture, hot tubs and pool tables to people moving to Missouri from Arizona and California. I see just about every lake in Missouri on a weekly basis.

The few that are still in the area are shedding employees or closing down. That may be a little of an exaggeration but not much. Those that provided outsourced part manufacturing to the auto industry are closed or closing, 3M in Columbia routinely lays off big gobs of workers, and that's all I ever hear from ABB in Jeff. You could look at the classifieds for both the Jeff City News-Tribune or the Columbia Tribune, but no surprise, there are many fewer help wanted ads there than before.

Could you help us choose a good location that has decent factory jobs? We want to stay within a couple hours of the lakes not one in particular and don't really want to be in a huge city like St. Louis. We have two children, not in school yet, and another one on the way so a community that is friendly and not a large amount of crime. thefts and stuff like that not a huge deal mostly worry bout murders and rapes, etc. thank you so much we really appreciate any help people could give us. We currently live in Nebraska so it's hard to get down there and look around for ourselves especially with it being winter.

Unfortunately mommyoftwo, your questions are tad too broad, and in that area, I would hazard to state, if there are any job openings specifically to factory work, well, my guess is that there is already a line quite long of applicants, most of 'em locals. In addition, you don't state what kind of factory work yas are looking for? Sorry, wish could have more in-depth info, but all can provide at the moment is a link:

Default about jobs

All I know is that we have had some area factories shut down because of the bad economy, so I would recommend doing all you can to secure employment before your arrival. And do not buy a house until you have rented for a couple of years, to be sure you want to live here. If you depend on public transit, it only runs until 5pm, and not at all on weekends.
