Well if some start changing to electronic billboards it will reduce the need for other ones. Also those could provide info on local and current events going on.

Also the St. Louis area is about the only place I have ever seen anti-abortion billboards. Acutally the makeup and tone of the religious billboards make for a good way of telling where the Catholic/Evangelical line is in the state.

All of this is interesting but is driving me nuts too, please help me out -

My family and I have driven I-70 from STL to DEN on multiple occasions. For those of you who have done it, you know that there is very little of memorable relevance between Denver and Salina, KS. However - some town in Kansas literally has two billboards at the same longitiudal coordinates on opposite sides of I-70 - and one says "So-and-So Adult Store" and another says "Pornography Destroys Families." The church and adult store are literally less than 300 yards apart! I can't remember the town - I think it's near Abilene.

If still there, was / is similar signs off west bound I-44 (just before Sullivan area?), but on same side of the road, one before the other.

What gets me worse are those signs that are all lit up, advertising the store, but the durn placed is closed - cause its after hours,,, yet they are paying for advertising + the waste of electric, for a place that is not open, showing it to people who aren't going to be remembering or stopping by no time soon.

I like the Missouri billboards, gives you something to read and helps you find places to stay, attractions to see and places to eat. I think they should be restricted to advertising hotels, attractions etc though. Porn shops, religious BS etc on the side of the highway is totally annoying.

I've seen 270 at 5 PM--pretty heavy traffic between 70 and Page Ave. The only bit of 435 I've seen during the dinner hour was up near the airport, and it's wide, wide open, unlike what I've heard about Johnson County.

But for real traffic, the 405 and 91 Freeways in southern CA, as BassMan well knows, make Missouri's two big metro areas a relatively stress-free experience. Probably I-70 between the bridge and St. Peters might be as close as it gets to LA traffic.

Late Edit: I'd be remiss if I didn't include Highway 101 in California's Marin County. There are two dreadful choke points: where all the westbound I-580 traffic dumps itself onto northbound 101, and where it pinches from 3 lanes to a piddling 2 lanes as you leave Novato going north. Not fun!

Well, that first photo could be 435 by KCI. Very remote highway.

Don't have many photos of KC, but here is 435 at State Line on the south side, not rush hour though:

I understand that KC or StL have very little traffic congestion compared to most major metro areas though.

While I appreciate the freedom we have to use billboards, I'd rather the things didn't exist at all. States that don't have them are far more pleasant to drive through. Even the under-appreciated flat-farmland type places are nicer because they're uncluttered.
Seriously, when was the last time you stopped somewhere because you saw it on a billboard? I personally can't remember when.
One solution would be to perhaps only allow them within the city limits while banning their use in rural areas.

So you think that people who live in the city limits should be able to profit from placing billboards but that farmers and other landowners along interstates who are designated as "rural" should not?

While I do not appreciate all the billboards along I-70 in Missouri I certainly would not advocate even further restriction of private property owners' rights. This is and should continue to be up to the states to regulate. People can vote with their feet and leave states whose laws they disagree or choose not to drive interstates along which they do not like the view.
