Hello! Glad to be here. I am thinking of applying for a job in Crow Agency, MT and wanted to get some details, first.

The job listing says its 18 miles from Hardin, MT and 60 miles from Billings, MT. Does anyone have any information on the Hardin area? How are the schools? We have an 8 year old (gifted) son so this is a concern. I'm leaning towards Billings but there don't seem to be any sort of charter or gifted schools. Does anyone know anything about this?

And if we did decide to live in Billings vs Hardin, which area should we try to find a place? I'd like the shortest drive possible up to Crow Agency.

Thanks so much, glad to be here! I'd love to live in Montana!

Crow Agency has been discussed several times here. You basically have 2 directions to go, either Billings, or Sheridan Wy. About the same distance, either way. I do not believe that Hardin will have anything you need.

Read through this thread, it might answer some of your questions. Crow Agency. Anyone familiar with the area?

Crow Agency is on the Crow Indian Reservation and I would never raise kids on a reservation. Too much crime, poverty, drugs, and general despair. Hardin sits right at the border and to be honest I prefer not to stop in Hardin when I am passing along the I-90 corridor. When we were kids we always took a rest stop in Sheridan with the understanding that we would not stop again until Billings. I don't know the situation with charter or gifted schools, but I do know that Montana's public schools are some of the most poorly funded in the nation.

Thanks for that link, Elk Hunter. Our best bet would probably be Billings. If anyone could chime in on the education issue, I'd appreciate it.

Anyone else want to chime in?

We also have to two dogs and would be renting, so that is a consideration as well.

The best place to find out about schools is

GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

It evaluates every school in the nation, as to quality.

You will find that in Hardin the schools there are very poorly rated as to the quality of education. In fact right down at the bottom. That is because it is so effected by the Crow reservation, and that is under the Bureau Of Indian Affairs, and the federal government. They just are not interested in educating the Indians as they are afraid if they do t he Indians will kick them off of the reservation and there go their cushy federal jobs.

Billings has some very good schools, and some mediocre schools.

Sheridan Wyoming is the same with some very well rated schools.

The Great Schools site, will help you find where there is a school you want for your child, and that will show you what part of the city you want to live in.
