Hi Folks! Im looking at moving to Monterey, but I have really been wondering about the political situation there. How is it?

A Republican represents Monterey in the State Senate. That's been true for a while now. But the rest of the legislative delegation is Democrat. If a plurality of Democrats scare you, this might not be the state for you.

This is absolutely the state for you!
Very cool news about Carmel. We were considering a move there not long ago as well. We decided Santa Barbara instead, but will be visiting your new area often.
I am so very envious
. I know a lot of new transplants to that area and I think it will be a wonderful experience as there is a plurality of political beliefs overall which is much more engaging as people actually talk about issues and look at them from a variety of perspectives and debate them. This would be so very enjoyable in a community. Somewhat unusual to find such a trendy, high end California, oceanside community that is dominant conservative (besides the O.C. and some areas of San Diego), especially up north.

(forgot to mention Pebble Beach is 60% republican and 25% Democrat, gosh i love golfing)
Thank you. I did consider Goleta, and Montecito too. I found that area to have the most character of Southern California cities. Splendid. I would love to someday own a second home in Montecito or Laguna Beach; Escape the nature now and then to a place in its perfect form.

carmel is really crowded, carmel valley is so beautiful but its been years since i've been there so i imagine it has seen a lot of growth

Hmmm, I think a big deal is made about this type of thing but I think most areas in California aren't really strong in either direction. I recall seeing a newspaper article a while back that showed all coastal California counties as generally voting for Democrats in national elections, such as the presidential election but from being in Monterey it definitely doesn't seem "conservative", I'm sure you could find people who are conservative, liberal and non-political there, Santa Cruz is definitely liberal and its not too far north of there.

Monterey County is overwhelmingly democratic according to registered voters. Monterey County also tends to vote very liberal including votes for legalization of marijana and same sex marriage. The Monterey County cities of Greenfield, Soledad, and Gonzales have some of the highest democratic registration in the state (all around 70%). There are pockets of republicans. This is typically in the richer areas, including local celebrity Clint Eastwood. Thankfully though, Monterey County is very liberal overall, much like me. So its a great home!
