Agreed but they still don't generally bring "new money" into a community unless they build something like a distribution centre there. It's just the same money that's already in the community that gets shifted around into different hands.

As kent said, though, they do tend to bring prices down for consumers. They have lots of continent-wide buying power that helps them keep prices down that Canadian-based, Quebec-based chains probably wouldn't have. Nor would the big French guys like Auchan, Carrefour and E Leclerc if they were to set up a satellite base to just serve Quebec - their savings on economies of scale are tied up in Europe.

Not sure I agree. If you compare prices at Home Depot vs Rona L'Entrepôt, they are pretty much similar, even though Rona is a regional chain. I'd even say that in general, they have better prices than their American competitor.

I'd imagine its the same all over, if a Walmart moves into your area the Mom and Pop places just cant match Walmart prices and usually those small stores in the immediate area go out of business.

By the way I don't see Canadian Tire translating their name in French.
They wouldn't have to. The OLF is asking them to do something like write in small letters "l'entrepot" in front of Canadian Tire, rather than change their brand name to something like Pneu Canadien.

There is no way Quebec store chains can match the prices of world giants like Walmart (THE biggest retailer in the world).

I guess Quebec residents would rather retain their french language laws and spend more of their hard-earned money. Because that will be the trade-off. Quebec is nothing to retailers this size.

I just think Quebec should separate and that's that. Then they will find out who in a global economy wants to do business with a obstinate language obsessed place like Quebec ---- NO ONE. Let them do trade with Haiti --- it's french and can probably be bossed around by the jerks in Quebec.

Not a bad argument. I wonder if guys like Rona would keep their prices down though if they did not have competition from American chains like Home Depot.

If they did leave Quebec would be hard pressed to replace with local companies the likes of Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Guess, Gap and Costco.

Also if the remote possibility did occur that they did in fact close up shop and leave it would certainly send a message to other prospective companies thinking about moving to Quebec that if the language issues are such that Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Guess, Gap and Costco are leaving it certainly would get other companies rethinking potential moves or expansions into Quebec.
