I just read a complaint on facebook - a single woman says when she signed for her mortgage she had to sign a statement that she was a single woman and that her parents were not signing with her. She says single women are asked to do this, but single men are not.

When I bought a house as a single woman (in a different state) I was not asked to sign anything like that.

Are there states that actually have this requirement?

Did her parents gift her money? I suspect they did and it was probably required by the mortgage company, stating that they do not have any rights to the house.

Weird. Never heard of that before.

Women used to not be able to get credit in their own name. I remember my mom getting her very first credit card that was for Mary Smith and not Mrs. John Smith. I am guessing there was something similar with mortgages? I do know that for my very first mortgage in the 1990s, I was listed as a spinster since I was a single woman. No idea if they used any term like that for men but I doubt it.

Are you sure she is not replacing unmarried with single? Can she produce a copy of the document or at least type the text word for word. My guess is she is misinterpreting something.

I had something similar when I refinanced my current house. I had to show my divorce papers, which was bizarre to me because we have been divorced over 10 years and share no children together, so it was not like I was proving he paid child support.

Obviously I don't. But I am asking others who live in other places, because I don't pretend to know everything.

A few years after my sister divorced, her husband somehow took out a loan on her house. I suppose they just wanted to be very sure there was no spouse who might show up later.
