SPRINGFIELD — Motorcycle riders and bicyclists would be able to go straight on a red light after coming to a complete stop under a measure sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday.
The proposal, approved on a 101-11 vote, is designed to address sometimes lengthy waits faced by bikers when they approach stop lights that change based on sensors in the roadway.

this is NOT running a red light.

I am guessing this would be allowed only when the motorcycle is at an intersection by itself. Probably a good idea, because sometime it seems even cars don't trigger the sensors or they are really slow to change.
Of course maybe a better idea is flashing red and yellows on intersections where there isn't much traffic at night etc. Its so irritating to wait on a red light when there isn't another motorist for miles. It seems to work out OK in Michigan where many stop lights change to flashing red & yellow at night.
Good. Can't count how many times I had to sit at a light waiting for it to turn on my bike only for it to never happen. This should be legal in all states.
Case law will certain be applied to only apply in the way we're thinking, I'm sure.
This is an issue that drives all of us on two wheels crazy...and I've done more than my share of lawbreaking in that regard after sitting there forever...with no cars even in sight in any direction...
I'm in. I sat and sat and sat waiting while 2 Staties laughed their hind ends off at me, one wagging a finger and pointing to his ticket book. Finally because the light didn't see me and wasn't going to, and the cops were actting like 2 fools, rather than wave me thru, I killed the engine and pushed the bike across the intersection. Then I took off my lid so they could see I am no punk kid, and read then the riot act, took their badge numbers and filed a formal written complaint. I told them I would and by God I did.
Now when a light doesn't see me I wait one cycle and RUN the Light !
Good for you. Sometimes I'll sit through a complete cycle and then run it. Other times, I'll just turn right on red and make a U-turn, then turn right again to get through the light.
(Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.)
