Just saw this, not too bad, some intense sequences and great acting throughout. Visual effects were superb (except for the organism).

Spoiler
That ending though, good god, mind blown!!!

Wow at your spoiler. I was planning on seeing it, but the forecast called for rain this weekend. I may have to suck it up and go anyway.

Is it terribly derivative of Aliens, etc.? I like a good sci-fi movie, but the trailer makes it seem like we've seen the movie before...like it's a spliced-together version of several other similar movies. (None of which will stop me from going to see it. I think my movie crew is planning to take it in on Sunday.)

It pays homage to Alien, yes, but a lot of movies are derivative of other movies. (rarely is anything truly original) Alien and Aliens are two of my favorite sci-fi/horror/action movies of all time. I went in knowing this would likely be very similar in tone, story, suspense, music, characters, etc., and I still enjoyed it a great deal. There were a lot of really intense moments. That creature, man. Wow. The VFX, music and acting were superb, as expected. It was a lot of fun.

I didn't think it was horrible but...

Spoiler
Okay, the creature has no protective exoskeleton. In the one scene, it's OUT IN SPACE with the captain for a good long while -- several minutes -- deprived of all oxygen and in a freezing environment.
How did it survive? In the beginning, when the creature first arrives on the ship and they are trying to bring it back to life, they have to adjust the atmosphere to something more Mars-like. Do I remember that correct?

But Mars is something like 95% carbon dioxide, and the atmosphere in the ship would be a more earthlike atmosphere; that is, mostly nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%)...according to Google. :-) So if the creature needed a Mars-like atmosphere to bring it to life, then why was it thriving in the ship's earth-like atmosphere, and why was it sucking down the oxygen candles as if they were it's primary life source, and why was it surviving in space without oxygen or carbon dioxide or any kind of exoskeleton to protect it?

Speaking of oxygen dandles as a primary life source: the critter only first began to move and respond in the lab when they fed it GLUCOSE. So was Oxygen the primary fuel source or glucose? In the scene near the end with the oxygen candles, the oxygen was making it BIGGER. I dunno. Didn't see how that was consistent with it's original presentation to us.

Also, the creature is described as as muscle and all brain. Okay, fine, but then why did it develop a head/face-like appendage? I think it was fine as a gelatinous starfish. It was clearly capable. Why did they
have to turn it into a hentai monster?

Were there TWO creatures? How did it get into the lab-guy's leg? I missed that part. I did have to step out of the auditorium to use the restroom at the beginning of the captain's space walk, but I don't recall how the creature made it into the lab-guy's leg.

I get that the creature was all brain and muscle. Okay. But going right away for the external comm array seems like some really advanced sabotage thinking for the creature in the early stages of its development.

Lastly, the movie wasn't set an an alternative universe. I think it's safe to assume these scientists had seen the Alien movie franchise. So what the H*LL were they thinking, bringing that thing on board, reviving it, and feeding it? Morons.

To me the biggest flaw is actually using your hands to touch the creature (no spoilers since we all have seen the trailer).

Why not use robotic arms? Sure would have made the movie less interesting but a scientist of that stature in a controlled environment.

To be fair, he was using common protective gloves in a controlled, sealed environment.
