Anybody ever see the Sidney Lumet flick Daniel? Great movie and great cast. But I just wanted to cut my wrists when it was over. I have Requiem For a Dream, but haven't yet looked at it since my son told me that he had to stay up all night watching SpongeBob episodes after he saw it, just to get it out of his head and go to sleep.
In terms of British cinema, there is a long history of what was know as Kichen sink realism, whilst directors such as the late Alan Clarke, Ken Loach and Mike Leigh were masters of misery, whilst the likes of Mike Hodges could be grim and depressing at times.

“Angela’s Ashes” was one of the most depressing books I read—period…
I bawled my eyes out multiple times reading that book. I know this is fodder for another thread, but there were points in the book and film that made me embarrassed to be a Roman Catholic.
