What movies that are depressing but compel you to think about serious questions are your most memorable?

In no particular order, these are mine:

Haulout (recent short documentary)
The Cove
Blackfish
[yes, the above three are of related themes]
Jacob’s Ladder
Mystic River
Osage County, August
In the Bedroom

The Remains of the Day (1993) with Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. Fantastic film, with a poignant message, but very sad.

I Love "Hachi: A Dog's Tale". I was crying during the movie. Animal movies get to me...

Do The Right Thing

The Lord of War

Gone With The Wind. Don't laugh. Pretty depressing story about how you can be so blinded by the pursuit of money that you throw away the one person who has always truly loved you for who you are and don't realize it until it is too late.

ETA: Actually the two people. Mammy loves her, too, but even she gives up on her.

Seven Years in Tibet

The end of the film leading into the closing credits reduces me to sobs.
