Yeah, McCartney played lead guitar as well as bass on "Taxman"
As per Geoff Emerick, engineer on the session, Harrison couldn't
nail down a good solo, so after an hour, he let McCartney try,
same solo was edited onto the fade out.
McCartney played a Epiphone Casino thru WEM Pep Rush fuzz pedal and his
1964 Fender Bassman amp.
McCartney played a number of guitar parts, some well documented
like lead on "Ticket to Ride", others not as well known.
Also being a drummer, he'd "show" Ringo drum patterns he wanted
on certain songs, like "Ticket to Ride".
It's McCartney playing drums on "Back in the USSR",
Ringo had temporarily quit and was hanging out with Peter Sellers
in Sardinia (where he wrote "Octopus's Garden")
Paul was/is kind of a grand stander. He wasn't content to *just* play bass and pretty much usurped lead guitar from George on those songs. Have you ever seen "Let it Be" -- ? There's a scene where Paul nitpicks every chord George plays, and it's clear he's trying to psyche George into believing he isn't good enough to play the song.
Don't get me wrong -- McCartney's an excellent showman and I don't mean to imply judgement -- Aggressiveness is a key component of success.

I bought the Help (UK) cd on amazon used in mint cond for $3.57 total. It has some very good songs on it like help, ive just seen a face, its only love, you've got to hide your love away, ticket to ride, etc. Good music. Beatles - Help! CD Album

I cant watch youtube on my system. A very good beatles cd is Beatles 1. The first 3 tracks are mono & the rest are true stereo (24 songs in stereo). Its a great cd & i enjoy listening to it on my sony portable stereo cd player. Beatles rock ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_(The_Beatles_album)
