"Dirty Water" by The Standells, all about Boston
"London Calling" by The Clash
"Detroit Rock City" by Kiss
"At the Hundredth Meridian" by The Tragically Hip, all about the Great Plains
Songs that "catch the essence" of a place for me for one reason or another:
Jersey Shore: "I Don't Wanna Go Home" by Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes
Miami: "Guantanamera" by Wyclef Jean
Buffalo: "Twist My Arm" by The Tragically Hip
Youngstown: "Ah, Leah" by Donnie Iris

English Countryside: "Boy With the Arab Strap" by Belle & Sebastian or "Thick as a Brick" by Jethro Tull
Appalachia: "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Flatt & Scruggs
Any hip, trendy, artsy neighborhood anywhere: "Sure Thing" by St. Germain
"Theme from Route 66" by Nelson Riddle. I always think of Tucumcari, New Mexico. I think of all the mom and pop motels and businesses; the neon sign over the Blue Swallow motel, the Sombrero restaurant with the big 50 foot sombrero. Lived there for a time in the early 80's, loved it! There are still a few billboard signs referring to 66 around town!

Agreed on the Riddle recording. It does get me thinking about the "Mother Road". But there's another composition entitled "Get Your Kicks on Route 66", composed by the late Bobby Troup and sung by the late, great Nat King Cole.
