Has the classic rock stations changed in the recent years? I've been noticing that our local classic rock station has been playing more of the 80s hair bands and the Arena Rock bands than they've used to in the past several years

Demographics my friend, demographics. Some consulting firm probably did a study and determined that the audience was graying and the music needed updated to bring in the thirty and forty-somethings. It really does happen like that, I was in radio for twenty years and saw it first hand.

Not sure if this is true, but I heard, in addition to Bazzwell's reply, that the Guitar Hero craze has added to the return of that kind of music.

25+ year old music is now considered "classic" by some. That puts a lot of the glam/hair/80's music into that format. I really don't mind the 80's stuff being thrown into the mix, as long as they balance it with what I would call "classic" rock. Like any kind of music, some of the 80's music was awful, and some of it was pretty good. Same with the 60's, 70's, 90's etc. Everything will eventually be "classic".

I even started to hear a bit of Metallica and Nirvana on the classic rock stations around here.

One of the local DJs on the classic rock station here made the case that if it is 20 years old (maybe 15?) then it qualifies as classic rock and they have modified the play lists accordingly. It works for me, gives a little more variety and lets me hear some songs I haven't heard in many years.

I don't even like to listen to classic rock stations anymore because they get more and more limited on the number of songs they play. You hear the same damn songs over and over and over again. I actually prefer to play oldies stations on-line (Radio 365) because there are several stations that we can switch around.

Yes I mostly agree with this post.

The classic rock stations might have 4 million great hits to choose from but take just 25 songs and play them over and over and over and over and over and over and over again....of course ripping in 45 minutes of commericals for every 60 minutes of broadcasting too.

JACK is nationwide and did away with DJs for the most part thereby eliminating a lot of payroll and allowing the station to play more music and less commericals. But still use a top 25 format and play the same old thing over and over.

Radio is also not what it used to be.

I hear ya!! Y103 plays not only Guns n' Roses and Poison these days, but a little Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

As a thirtysomething who loves the late 80's/early 90's metal bands from before Nirvana and grunge hit, I just love the change. It is nice to get music from my era along with the great 70's classic rock, instead of having to listen to stations that play a bunch of alternative and Nu Metal junk. In the nineties, guys my age were stuck with either an overload of alternative, or classic rock stations that only played seventies stuff from when we were little kids. Those of us in the older segment of Generation X, "too young to remember Woodstock, too old to be a slacker", have waited a few years now for the rock stations to bring our era of stuff back. It is so great to have my era being embraced by classic rock stations!!!

I have definitely noticed the trend of more 80's/90's music being played on stations owned by the huge corporations.

Fortunately, there is a great independent classic rock radio station in the Charlotte area. They play lots of tracks outside the normal rotation. For instance, if they play a Yes song they don't just throw on Roundabout or Owner of a Lonely Heart. Plus, they don't have a morning show or any of that other crap.
