I find it extremely unsettling that PRINCE made the list, but nowhere do I see any mention of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Albert King needs a nod. Consider Leo Kottke for a darkhorse (his stuff is just so unique). I like the mention of Knopfler, but if you go with Knopfler you need to recognize Chet Atkins. Les Paul was great. I would grudgingly acknowledge Slash because he just has that sound that no one else has. To me, that's what makes a great guitarist; you can hear a few lines of a new song and know who the artist is...
I love guys like Malsteem, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani for their technical proficiency and accomplishment in music theory, but I personally feel that there is less substance in the music and if they were all on the same stage I'm not certain that I could pick out which one was playing just by listening. In other words, if each of them played Joe Satriani's guitar with Satriani's equalizer settings, would you be able to tell who was playing? I'm not sure that you could.
Anyway, my top 10 in no particular order...
Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Albert King
Freddie King - I love that "crunch" he puts in the blues
Mark Knopfler
Leo Kottke
Eddie Van Halen - a true technician with soul
Chet Atkins
Jeff Beck - when he was with The Faces
Jeff Healey - the blind guy from Roadhouse...
Honorable Mention: Joe Bonarossa, Carlos Santana, Slash and a whole host of others that I am forgetting about.
