Benny and Polydor apparently sent 3,000 letters to radio stations explaining this song was not about Pedophilia, rather Abandonment. He wrote it about his neighbors, and the 16 y.o. daughter abandoned by her father. Apparently, Benny would pay the 16 y.o. daughter $50.00/week to walk his dog daily. He tried to help them make ends meet.
The words " Separated by fools, Who don't know what love is yet." and " I can't measure my love, There's nothing to compare it to." References the dysfunction in the family and Benny's wish for her to have unconditional love.

After the letters were sent this song got added on playlists throughout the U.S. He reached # 20 in the charts at the beginning of the 80s and again in 89. He was the only artist to release the same song two times in a decade and have both releases peak at # 20.
