Henry King, In Old Chicago [excerpts, Part One] - YouTube Alice Faye singing "In Old Chicago" is followed by footage from the film; then, she sings "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny", which actually takes place much earlier in the film. That's the extraordinarily handsome Tyrone Power. The studio originally planned for Jean Harlow and Clark Gable to play those roles, but Harlow's sudden death changed their plans, giving Faye and Power important roles that really kickstarted their careers.
Danny Kaye's wife, Sylvia Fine, wrote the lyrics for all of the songs=} She was able to write brilliantly for Danny's tonguetwisting, dazzling delivery.
Remember: Hubert Hawkins: I've got it! I've got it! The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true! Right? Griselda: Right. But there's been a change: they broke the chalice from the palace! HH: They *broke* the chalice from the palace? G: And replaced it with a flagon. HH: A flagon...? G: With the figure of a dragon. HH: Flagon with a dragon. G: Right. HH: But did you put the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle? G: No! The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon! The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true! HH: The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true. G: Just remember that.

The defining film of that era for me, not least because of its terrific Bernard Herrmann soundtrack with that gorgeous saxaphone which just reeks of seedy urban jungles and late nights in dark rooms.
