I'm trying to narrow down my search for a place to rent in the area. I'll be working downtown near Bridgestone Arena. I'd like the live in a suburb/neighborhood that will give me the most bang for my buck. I'm not willing to spend a grand per month to be close to the trendy areas, but I'm not wanting to be out in the sticks either. I'm interested in a part of town that's safe (#1 priority) and within 35 minutes of my work, the closer the better obviously. Public transportation (bus or train) is a plus. Parks, too. No need for fancy stores, just a Target & Publix/Kroger would do. Both Hendersonville and Mt Juliet seem nice, but maybe too far out?

Bellevue might also be a choice for you. There are buses from the area to downtown, and a park-and-ride bus shelter in the area. There is a little park and a huge park nearby and stores in the area (the nearest Walmart and Target are over on Charlotte, a five to ten minute drive).

Hendersonville can be iffy at commuting time because so much of the traffic is on Vietnam Veterans. I don't travel that route but I've had some friends tell me it can take over 30 minutes just to get from Hendersonville to Metro Center (northwest of downtown) on some days.

You might want to start your search closer in however. There are some older apartments building a few blocks off the main corridors in the Midtown area that could have something since I take it you only need a 1BR apartment (you might be able to find something that a Vanderbilt or Belmont student is moving out of). I don't keep up with apartment rental rates so I might be wrong about this.
