It has been about 50 years since I last saw fire flies. I look forward to seeing them again and having my wife see them for her first time when we retire in Tennessee.

Fireflies like weeds. Find a neglected vacant lot with lots of weeds, and you will find lots of fireflies. But they also like grass and trees, so you can find them in any area with lots of grass and trees. But you see a lot more of them in weeds.

It's probably a little too late this year, as they only do their thing for about two weeks in early to mid-June, but try to catch (not literally - make that "observe", as it's illegal to catch them) the synchronous fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - it's one of only two places in the world where they occur, the other being SE Asia.

The park sells very inexpensive shuttle bus tickets to the Elkmont area where the fireflies congregate, or you can camp at Elkmont - but both tickets and campsites sell out rapidly. However, you can usually catch a glimpse of the fireflies a night or two before or after their "official" season, after the shuttles cease, and just drive yourself right into the campground area (just don't plan on camping), as I did recently.

It was just magical...the forest floor was covered with thousands of silvery twinkling fireflies who would abruptly go dark, only to twinkle simultaneously a few seconds later. The synchronicity doesn't start until it's completely dark, however, so take a folding chair or blanket and prepare for a fairly long evening.

Everyone should see this marvel at least once in his or her life.

jguillot: What's bringing you to the state, and where are you coming from?

Is it me, or are more people coming to Mid-Tenn to retire?

I'm originally from the south (Louisiana), but I'm currently living on the "left" coast (California). I've had enough of the political climate in California, high taxes, high cost of living, unfriendly people, bumper to bumper traffic, lack of rainfall, etc. I could go on and on.

My wife and I are retiring in Tennessee because we love the green rolling hills and mountains, friendly people, a much lower cost of living, slower paced way of life, lower real estate costs, etc. The state of Tennessee also makes retiring in Tennessee attractive because retirement pensions are not taxed. We have not made the move yet, but our 2 closest future neighbors have already made us feel very welcomed. We're very anxious and excited to be retiring in Tennessee.

Understand, Ex-Californian myself. Born and raised up in Nor-Cal. You've listed very nearly the same reasons I left. Because I grew up in CA, I though the rest of the country was more or less the same. Quite a shock (albeit pleasant) find out it isn't.

Because TN doesn't have a state income tax correct?

There a lot of both-coaster's relocating to TN, CA and NY.

Good luck settling in and Welcome Home!

Fireflies are out in force in Brentwood, TN

But I don't think we have quite as many here as in Pennsylvania -- at least the heavily wooded PA suburb where my Dad lives and where I visited last weekend.
