Hiya! There is a strong chance that we may be relocating to Nashville soon (and are very excited about it!). We are coming from Ft Lauderdale in a very central location. We are both close to 40, no kids, a little quirky, and very liberal. We also would like to be somewhere close (talking 5 min. or less by car) to dining & entertainment, even if it is a "pocket" area (I've heard about Five Points but not sure where this is....?). It seems our best fit is East Nashville but we are unsure of exactly where this begins and ends. We are looking to rent, not buy.

Thanks for your help, locals!

Hi, I live in East Nashville so I hope I can help you with this. Once you cross the river (Cumberland) going East past the Titans Stadium, you are in east Nashville. Head down Shelby, Woodland, or Main and you are officially in East Nashville. 5 points that you speak of is in the heart of the historic districts (there are three) on the corner of 10th and Woodland st. There are a number of restaurants and bars there, a bike shop, great wine store, coffee shop, etc. In and around there are the Historic districts (Edgefield, Lockeland Springs, Historic East End) with a mix of 100+ year old homes, new historic replica and a number of condo projects. East Nashville is bordered on the south side by the Cumberland River. The north side is subject to opinion but I would say it is the area south of Ellington Parkway. This creates a pie shaped wedge that extends basically through a neighborhood called Inglewood until you hit Briley Parkway (when you reach Madison). There are some other little pocket neighborhoods in there as well but that pretty much covers it.

You might also want to check out the Germantown area near downtown, Edgehill, and the Hillsboro Village area.

hmm, I would say: parolees

edited to add: if I were going to rent there are a million other places I would look...I would only live in East Nashville if I were going to buy and that would be for hopes the area will appreciate (it probably will AT SOME POINT because of it's close proximity to downtown), in the meantime making sure I had a gun handy for protection from some of the "locals"...

This is pretty hurtful and not a very nice way to welcome new people. I came here looking for help and was honest about our personalities - we are super friendly, good people who appreciate others from all walks of life. If no kids, quirky, & liberal = former jailbirds in Nashville perhaps we are moving to the wrong place.

Note from Husband: Thanks for making my wife cry. Is there no more constructive way to inform us that this is not a part of town we want to be in?
There are so many different opinions from different sources that is it difficult site unseen to make an informed decision. We would like our first year's experience there to lack a lot of avoidable crisis and hassle. I personally am all for the Stahlman Building but she wants to find something more homelike and community oriented. Any input sans snide remarks or grammatical critique would be greatly appreciated. You really started the day of planning off with an unneeded downer.

I don't think Scott meant to be hurtful. Sure, there are parts of East Nashville is less than digestible elements, but the positives are quickly outweighing the negatives. If you find yourself in a sketchy area, you'll know it and move on, but otherwise, my years here on the eastside have been nothing but good.

Thanks for the more positive input, HW & IngleDave! We are not looking to buy, just to live in an area that is age-appropriate (walkin' the edge of 40) but still with easy access to things to do. Where we live now we are 5 minutes to the beach and interstate, and 2 minutes to downtown & our own Five Points area for dining, shopping, and pubs, so we are spoiled! The places that seem best are E.Nashville, Germantown, and Belmont/Hillsboro, but I am concerned that Hillsboro may be too young. Keeping our age in mind, is there any area of Nashville that you would recommend? HW, do you deal with rental apartments and/or houses? We are all about easy access and are not at all candidates for suburbs. School district is irreleveant as we have no kids and do not plan on any.

Again, thanks for any positive feedback that you think may help with a long distance search!

p.s. - We have lived in S.Florida for 12 years and I have traveled extensively. In my experience, in almost every city you can travel 2-3 blocks and have a neighborhood take a drastic turn. If a neighborhood is relatively safe but still in the midst of being renovated we are okay with that - just want to be able to walk our dog at night without being worried.

miahowl-

The borders of East Nashville depend on who you ask. Many people include Inglewood but I and many others don't. I would concentrate your efforts in the 37206 zip code.

East of Gallatin road is pretty much a must.

After that I'd say just take a look and see where you like/don't like.

Many will talk about crime in the area but it has gone down drastically and will continue as more and more gentrification occurs. I'm of the opinion that it's not much worse than other parts of the city. In the vast majority of cases, unless you keep "that" type of company you'll be fine.

East Nashville is a great place to live, but it's not for everyone. It seems like it would be a good fit for you. Check out the other thread about commuting to Murfreesboro, as I gave that poster some things to check out in the area...and please let me know if I can help in any way.
