I work downtown and commute from Murfreesboro right now, which is a hard drive up and down I-24. I've been living with my brother for now and am trying to get out on my own.

I need to find a place that is one week's take home pay in order to be solvent, which is about $600 per month for me. An easier commute would be nice, too.

The bottom dropped out for me in Phoenix last year because rent ended up being almost 50% take home pay, then medical bills finished me off, and I just couldn't afford it with everything else. Plus, I want to have a savings account for once in my life that I can contribute to monthly.

Seem like these places that rent for $1000 per month are for 2 income couples and I have things wrong with me and will likely always be single.

Anyone know of an area outside Nashville with affordable rent?

Bellevue and Antioch used to be more affordable but it seems they have gone up a couple hundred dollars in the last few years. There are SO many apartments being built that perhaps the area will eventually get saturated. Some of the older complexes in those areas might be closer to your budget.

Have you looked at roommate situations? You probably could get a 2 bed apartment shared with someone for $600/mo ea.

I read somewhere last week that went down in Nashville for the first time recently. I think the market is finally catching up to demand.

You're very highly unlikely to find something at $600/month. Even in the less nice areas, the starting point is $750-850/month. Ditto with anything outlying (Ashland City, Hendersonville, etc.) If you were closer in, you'd save on the commute costs which could be put towards rent.

You might check Craigslist but I would be very wary of it. Notorious for scams.

Places in Antioch, Madison, Donelson, Hermitage, LaVergne, Smyrna, Hendersonville, Gallatin, and Lebanon rent for $700-$850 for a 1 bedroom apt. according to Apartments.com Murfreesboro does as well but that's probably not of interest since you already live there.

$600 will be pretty unlikely. I wish I had better news.

The other issue is that people with little 'mother in law' apartments are making way more money on Airbnb or VRBO than they would with one renter, which is taking all those places off the market. They can make the same renting it for a week than they used to make for renting it for a month.

Thanks guys! Honestly, even if I did bring home 1000-1400 per week, I doubt I would want to hand that much over to a landlord.

The search goes on, but I am sending my resume out to other cities and states with better rent.
