The Metro Police Department has some interactive crime maps (link below). They are somewhat irritating to use, but they would provide you with detailed information for each part of Nashville.

Nashville.gov - Police Department Home page Look down the page in the left-hand column.

I've looked at them a few times before I decided what part of town to move to and I think they're actually pretty helpful. The one unpleasant thing a person needs to consider when moving to a new neighborhood is the fact that expensive areas of any major city tend to have much less crime while rundown areas have less political clout, a much higher crime rate, residents who are much poorer, and the general population will generally just avoid going to that part of town. I moved here from Phoenix about a year and a half ago and spent quite a bit of time considering the pros and cons of various neighborhoods. I live in East Nashville which has pockets of higher crime areas and neighborhoods that are generally pretty safe. I feel comfortable in my neighborhood but I realize that just a couple of miles away, particularly along Gallatin St. that crime is much higher than where I live. Nashville is not a huge city like Philadelphia and I think that the crime map is actually a pretty good indicator of certain parts of town that should be avoided if you're concerned about crime. Good luck.

The most dangerous areas of town are really north nashville (bordeaux, buena vista heights, surrounding hoods of metrocenter), Madison is pretty bad, dickerson pike across the river, east nashville, further way south antioch, Nolensville Pike, Cleveland Park.... mainly if you stay south of downtown, south of the river, and west of 8th ave south when it gets closer to downtown you should be good. the areas i listed are high in assuaults and drugs and stuff so yeah

I would have to say that it depends on your budget. Thegreek is probably right though... I am a first time homebuyer, a young single female, and after weighing the pros and cons I decided to settle in East Nashville. But I had to look in some extremely shady areas in order to finally find the perfect home in my price range and in a decent area over there. The following link provides you with a heat map of all Nashville neighborhoods and the average prices of homes in those areas. It's color coded to make it easy and you can zoom in. It is pretty safe to make the assumption that higher property values lead to nicer areas, but I settled in a "light green" area that is still decent. Just a thought.

best of luck in your search!

Trulia is a neat site. I do see that the foreclosures and people bailing on their houses due to financial burdens have seriously made their data unrealistic. $180k house neighborhoods have a median house price of $130's due to a couple foreclosures. So you have to look at the bigger picture.
Comps dont count anymore unless they dont include the foreclosures.
