Hey. I am moving from out of state to Nashville. I drive a 1998 Dodge Intrepid ES, and am wondering if I have to worry about passing the emissions test when I go to register my vehicle in Davidson county. The car is in reasonably good shape, but I have never had to run this kind of test on it, and frankly know nothing about the test, or if I have to worry. Any information would be really helpful. Please let me know if I should worry, or any info. I called on it, and all they could tell me is that the test is $9.

We also had the "test" in Wilson county. Don't worry if you can't pass the test. They will let you pay for that one and you got to go fix the car so it will pass the test. And you get to take it again, and spend another $9.00.

OBDII vehicles (1996+ I think) just get plugged in. If there is no check engine light on, it will pass. Pre-OBDII vehicles (OBDI and non-computerized) get sniffed so it's not as easy to tell if you will pass. I don't think the standards are all that stringent so it's usually not a problem.

A 1998 should just get the computer check and gas cap check. If the engine light is not on it will pass. If you've removed the cats they will fail it. They do check.

Um.. If you fail the test the first time, They will let you run it one more time without a charge. Atleast that's how they've done it for me in the past in Gallatin and Madison.
