We love seeing the squirrels jump up on the bird baths to drink water. The bluebirds has started their group bathing's also. I have three bird baths and I have to refill or refresh the water in them every day.
22 baby sea turtles hatched this morning. Save most of them by keep the birds at bay.
Good man. The fish crows on my stretch of beach have this down to a science. A flock will perch in trees and sea grapes along the dune line and a single scout will fly down the beach. If he doesn't find any hatchlings the rest of the gang moves down the beach to a new perch and another scout goes out. Once he spots a hatchling and dives down to get it, the others converge on the area snatching any babies they see. I've spent a few mornings running around shouting and waving my arms fighting off crows and sea gulls to give the little guys a chance to get to the water. Once in the water, they then have to worry about snook, tarpon and sharks among other dangers. The first few weeks of a baby sea turtle's life are filled with mortal danger.

The Racoons wait up on the dune line and wait for the turtles to lay eggs and as soon as she is off the nest they're digging up the eggs. Only 1 in 1000 turtles make it to adulthood.
It's been a good year for turtle nests by me on south Hutchinson Island, started early too.
I was walking in Maudslay State Park tis morning, brandishing my cell phone loaded with Merlin Bird ID now and then, in Sound ID mode. And I found that there was one suite of birds in the trees bordering a huge open meadow, and another suite of birds well into the forest. I found that interesting, and it also made me wonder why each set of birds preferred the environment it did.
Some of the birds deep into the forest were (still on my screen):
- Scarlet Tanager
- White-breasted Nuthatch
- Downy Woodpecker
- Pileated Woodpecker
- Pine Warbler
- American Goldfinch
And I can't recall them all, but in the trees bordering the big meadow were:
- Blue Jay
- Cardinal
- Carolina Wren
- Chickadee

Well, they happened to "prefer" those habitats at that moment in time when you recorded them. All of those species are highly mobile foragers especially if they have young to feed. An hour later all those individuals could be someplace very different. Summer's getting on. Many of their chicks may be fledged or close to it so they're also mobile. Now, if you repeated your surveys multiple times at different times of day your observation might tell you something more meaningful .

Just saw two hummingbirds at the backyard feeder staging one of their little territorial battles and doing their best to stage the avian version of 'Top Gun'. Strange thing is that every time I've seen one of these battles, the winner doesn't seem to return to the feeder very quickly to claim the victor's reward.
another adult skunk, and this one had only a "blaze" of white on its head.
no stripes no nothing else white...just its "whitecap".
