I was visiting a friends house this weekend and we barely avoided one of my kids getting bit by this snake this weekend. I feel like it may be a copperhead, it did try to shake it tail but there was no rattle on it. Its head was fairly big so I thought it was poisnous. I was able to take several pics. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
yup, definatly a copperhead, beautiful (but scary) one at that.
glad noone was harmed, i love snakes, they are amazing creatures, as long as the venemous ones either keep their distance or give me fair warning im getting too close.
he was shaking his tail to try and warn you to back off, they try to wiggle it in the leaves to rattle like a rattlesnake can...

For emphasis, yep - definitely a copperhead.
They are pit vipers just like rattlesnakes. Their venom isn't as toxic but still not something you can just shake off. The primary concern in the event of a bite is compartment syndrome from the swelling, necropsy of the local tissue and infection. It's serious, but the venom isn't likely to kill a human older than 5 or 6.
If you get bitten by a snake and don't know what it is, snap a picture with your iPhone or make a good mental note so that you could identify the snake from a picture in a book. That can make all the difference.
i try to teach my dogs and cats to stay away from snakes...
1: because they are beneficial animals and 2: because id never want the panic of having to rush them to the vet for antivenom

That's the first I've ever seen one! Pretty little things. All I've seen here so far are chicken snakes. Even had one in the house once. Scared the pee outta me as I came around the corner and Randy in front of me jumped straight up in the air. I went running and screaming until I knew it wasn't going to eat me alive. John caught it and I went to pet it a bit, then we took it outside and let it go. Got some great pictures of it first of course! Snakes are very cool. I just don't like them in my house!
Looks like a copperhead to me, the head looks triangular instead of rounded...? Not sure, but it sure looks like one?
