There are some scary stories circulating on the Net about the situation at the Fort Calhoun plant. Some are calling it the American Fukushima. Does anyone have on-the-ground information to offset all the hair-on-fire stuff?

I have heard alot of stuff as well. The only thing I can verify is that there is a no-fly zone over the plant.

It was shut down for refueling before any water issues even began.

The comments I'm seeing concern the spent fuel pool, where the pumps circulating cooling water apparently went offline sometime in the past week or so. Apparently there are some local television news reports now on YouTube that are the source.

Not to belittle Pakistan, but that isn't who I'd usually look to for objective information about the US...

Given the fact that the Mighty Mo has long been known as a river that floods on occasion, I'd be really surprised to find out that even if it were completely online flooding was a contingency that hadn't been planned for.

That news article actually made me laugh a little. The anti-nuclear crowd is trying so hard to spin this story to be another Fukushima when it's nothing even remotely close to that.

The fire was caused by an electrical short, not flood waters. There was loss of power to pumps for the plant's spent fuel pools as a result of the fire, but a backup system was brought online within 90 minutes.

But of course there's a news blackout ordered by Obama, so OPPD's clearly lying to us and Omaha is in danger of being irradiated.

Cool The Sky is NOT Falling...

Someone ruined nebreater's great ongoing picture thread by posting some more of that hyperactive, hysterical garbage on it.

So tired of the purposeful hysteriacs who so desperately need to feel self-empowerment by playing Chicken Little to the unedumificated masses. (And yes, it is purposeful.)

People worrying about their families and friends losing their homes to the rising floodwaters, don't need hyperbolic hysteria from manipulative people with political agendas.
