Does anyone know if Grand Island had an F. W. Woolworth store in the 1940's? If not, was there another national chain variety store in GI during that time?
These were sometimes called "Dime Stores." Another big chain was S.S. Kresge Co.
Thanks.

Not sure if G.I. had a Woolworths in the 1940s but I lived there in 1966 and I seem to remember a Woolworth's downtown but I never shopped there, just drove by.

Duckwall's and Ben Franlin's were other five and dime stores in small towns in Nebraska in the 1960's and earlier. Rexall's and Walgreen's were higher end Drugstores and they sometimes had soda fountains. Gibson's and Gambleswere Hardware stores. Most were family owned franchise type operations. Small town Main street business has changed drastically in the last fifty years. Mail order was big back then with Monkey Wards and Sears Roebuck doing huge catalog sales and pickup at local retail stores. Now UPS and FedEx deliver orders taken from a website on your home computer and drop it at your front door.
What will they think of next?
