All of the outdoor activities but still enough of the gaming options to satisfy what i want. Unless i'm reading the replies wrong i think reno sounds perfect for what i imagine it to be.
Reno is the best of both worlds. It's a great town.

I was looking on mapquest and it said that reno is 50 miles from lake tahoe but it said the driving time was 2+ hours, could someone explain to me how this is? Also is lake tahoe kind of like a suburb of the reno area or is it pretty far out there by itself? Next i would like to know what the "real"(i like to drive faster than the speed limit) driving time is between las vegas and reno and what are the speed limits on the highways in nevada usually? I'd also like to know the real driving time between reno and san francisco too if anyone knows and the speed limit as well? Finally could someone please tell me how the casinos in the reno/lake tahoe area differ if at all from the casinos in vegas? I'm particularly interested in if the sports books, table games and eating options in the reno area casinos are on par with the vegas casinos? Thanks for your help.
Lived in the Reno area my whole life. Reno to Tahoe, maybe 35 minutes, but that's to Incline Village. It could take up to another hour or more to get somewhere else on the lake. You probably won't go through Carson City to get there. Use the Mount Rose Highway. Remember Tahoe is BIG.

To Las Vegas, figure 7.5 to 8.5 hours depending on speed, traffic, etc. Like Tahoe, Vegas is big. could take 7.5 hours to get to the edge and another hour to get to the strip. Still, a nice days drive. The Highway Patrol is generally near the towns. Keep tabs on where you are. People get in trouble when they approach one of the towns and fail to slow down.

I have made it to the Oakland Coliseum in 3.5 hours from Carson City. San Francisco is like four hours unless you hit rush hour, then who knows. Don't arrive at 5:00 on a weekday, especially Friday. Never been pulled over on I-80 or US 50. Seen very few CHP. Honestly, if traffic is light traffic in the fast lane is going 80. Real speed limit is anywhere from 65 to 70 (might be 75 in few spots). They rarely pull over someone if they are going with the flow.

Reno casinos are not as fantastic as the big ones on the Strip in Vegas. Still, they are big, have great food, headline entertainment and all the games you can find in Vegas. Reno has many sports books, again, not as grand as some in Vegas, but plenty of great places to bet on sports, watch a game, etc. In a lot of ways, the Reno casinos are friendlier and more attractive to locals. Reno also has a few "locals" places that are nice and have good deals on food.
