Dave - of all people, I can't believe you posted a link to a Public TV story! Aren't they left-leaning socialist .gov propaganda?
Seriously though, I was surprised to see that hands free is really no safer than hand held. I think there'd be rioting in the streets if hands-free was banned as well. Perhaps the law was a compromise, or perhaps the first step in banning all phone use in cars eventually.
Texting while driving already illegal in NH, although lots of people I see breaking that law everyday.
Either way, I can wait until I pull over or exit the car. I don't need to be that reachable anymore.
^^^ This. I usually have my cell phone off when I drive. There is no crisis important enough that I need to be reached while driving. All calls can wait. Let my friends miss me. And since I'm not a doctor, I can't actually be of help in an emergency. The only time I would consider using my cell phone while driving in my car is if I were stopped in traffic and needed to call work to let them know that I'm going to be late.
The traffic flow on the interstates are too fast for me to want to have a cell phone in my right hand held up to my ear. Then on the nice country roads, I want to be alert for wild animals and people trying to back out of their driveways. I like having my hands at the 10 and 2 o'clock position. Plus I drive stick.
I'm sure that this rule isn't going to be enforced, but I do like that this law makes it official that talking on a cell phone while driving is wrong. Writing in a notebook while driving is also a very stupid thing to do. But the reason that there's not a law against it, is only because almost no one does it... so if all of you freedom fighters want to start writing in notebooks while driving, let's see what happens next in the legislative process.

Hence the new law, which will also be broken everyday

With that logic, we should get rid of DWI laws and even laws against assault and murder. Just because people will break the law doesn't mean it shouldn't be there.

having an anti texting law makes perfect sense Steve, extending it to phone calls simply because it isn't working as planned doesn't, bust the offenders and leave the rest alone.. with your kind of logic free thought should also be banned because many people have bad thoughts
uh actually the law was put into place more to deal with texting than actual talking, texting as we all know is more akin to writing in a note book ( digital or otherwise) Writing or texting Is stupid, talking on a cell phone is only stupid if one is stupid to begin with.. the average person can handle it quite well
Uh no. The average person these days lacks commonsense in a big way. The average person isn't actually all that bright. Then add to that those addicted to their social networks like Facebook. At work, I see my co-workers compulsively and surreptitiously checking their phones for FB updates and texts from their friends all of the time.
And you being on a motorcycle all of the time, I'd think that you especially would want your country roads free of drivers talking on their cells phone and not paying full attention to driving and their surroundings. Plus in NH (ME and VT too) at any time wild life can suddenly appear in the road. In the warmer months, we also have to share the roads with bicyclists and (since we don't have sidewalks) people walking their dogs. Last winter, my boyfriend had to swerve suddenly when someone was trying to back their car out of their driveway and high snow banks were blocking their vision. Had my boyfriend been talking on a cell phone, he'd have hit that car for sure.
And those accidents do affect all of us, not just the idiots involved. Traffic gets backed up and any damage to the people and the motor vehicles get passed back to us in higher medical and auto insurance premiums.

Good point but replace "cell phone" with seatbelt and/or helmet. Is that the direction you want NH to go? I for one enjoy living in NH because we are more free to make our own decisions than most other states. Once that freedom to choose goes away we will be no different.

When I am out riding I concern myself less with cell phone users and more with vehicles plastered with COEXIST, TOLERANCE and especially WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLE stickers.. they see to be the most dangerous lot by far. This year because of the surgery I have fewer miles thus far, about 1800, but the only remotely close call was the other day..guy in a Volvo..no cell phone involved.
While my professional driving career was short three years) I had to utilize both a cell phone and a radio, eat while driving, add to this smoking and drinking coffee.. never had an accident and the only close call was when someone decided they wanted the toll lane I was in.
So while there are indeed stupid people on the road that cannot chew gum and drive at the same time by and large the majority do just fine.. again this is a law to drum up revenue and to throw a blanket over the whole thing because cops just can't do their job correctly.. fine em all..make money and avoid accountability.
Just as an aside.. the law will not affect my usage at all..yeah I'll be one of them disobedient folks and I ain't worried a bit about Officer Friendly catching me

Freedom doesn't go away it is given away.. sheepishly accepting dumb ass laws like this is what does it

There it is. Read it and know it. It doesn't happen at once, it happens chip by chip under the name of safety and security.
