KarynO what town do you live by that you don't know your neighbors after 12 years? I am an independent person and looking to move to NH but hope I can at least have some friendly neighbors. So far generally I have been looking around the area southwest of Concord.
I know my neighbors. People do keep to themselves and I think it is a part of the rural lifestyle. Work, work, work. When you own land and/or multiple buildings and big toys, it seems like all you do is work. When I lived in a more urban or thickly settled neighborhood it was couple hours of housework on Saturday a.m. and then tons of kids playing, cook-outs, hanging by the pool....everyone knew everyone etc...& when I bought my prior house in MA, each neighbor came to the door to welcome me, which I'm sure happens in NH too....but having lived in both states I don't see one more friendly than the other in particular as in the north vs. the real south. Back to "I know my neighbors"...actually, there are many I've never even seen.
That is where the NH Moto "Live Free or Die" comes from. You are free to work, work, work all your life and then die.
This is the typical cynical attitude found in southern New England (which is pretty much defined by MA; RI just wants to be like MA; CT is part of NYC) that northern New Englanders reject. Northern New England has changed with VT becoming a state of hippies and ex-New Yorkers and Maine being a state of tax & spend liberals. I escaped from MA 15 years ago and would have gone to NC or some other region of the country if NH had not been here. I grew up in Boston in that Democrat, old boy, state worker, corrupt environment and hated it....
