In many cases, if you disconnect the battery then reconnect, the check engine light will go out.
It will only stay off for a few miles, so I would do it right before I drove to the inspection station.

Sorry, doesn't work that way. If you pull the battery to reset the computer, you then need to complete the proper set of drive cycles before the computer is "ready", until then you still will not pass.
then it must depend on the inspector - I have a 95 Buick with the light on continuously for a couple years now, but all checks of the engine are fine and it passes emissions
and it passes inspection every time
IMO you had something else wrong with the car
There are over 80 items linked to the check engine light. If you disconnect the battery and let the car sit for a few minutes, the memory in the computer will be reset and the check engine light will go out, however if there IS a sensor failing, the light WILL come back on.
95' is pre OBD, and so can't be plugged into the pc and to Concord.
Why the light is ON depends..... It can be ON as a remider for service, or it can be ON to tell you a code needs to be read, and a problem fixed.
With out the OP's year make and model, no can answer the question.
Is this an annual thing or only bringing a vehicle in from out of state?
Annual scam, raping of the public at large. For pre OBD the fee is 20/25 bucks, with OBD the fee is 40/50 bucks each and every stinkin' year, and does nothing much good.
It's a tax thang.. and feeds a overly bloated fat system.

Worked for me. Worth a try since it takes 2 minutes and costs nothing.

Yes it will get the light to temporarilly go out, but the car won't pass a legit NH inspection, if yours did then the person that inspected your car wasn't quite on the up and up.
Pulling a battery on a 1999/2000 chevy might not get it, but you might tell the state inspector you had the battery out a while.
Last summer i had a barttery out of a chevy pick up a good long while and it took 500 miles of driving for the gizzmo's to re-set...... Knowing the battery was out a while made some difference to the state.

Thanks. I'll remember to go back to him next year.
I forgot to mention in my earlier post...some times the engine light has to do with the gas cap of all things...that's what happened to me once & it recently happened to someone else I know.
