Yankeehombre - the place you describe does not appear to exist anywhere anymore. Too bad, actually.
Sad, but true. The one place I know of where the lifestyle you describe still seems to be hanging on is Aroostook County, Maine and some of the tiny communties in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota.
I too recall tree tunnels over the local roads in summer, all gone now, and a time when no boats were very fast on Lk Winnie.
When there were job enough you could rent buy a little place and stay in it to raise a family and mind your one bee's wax.
All of that is gone. And we have replaced it with high property taxes, no time, and a fast lane just like every other state with it's fast lane life style.
What I don't understand is 'They said it couldn't happen here!'
I still miss the tarry smell of gun oil and pipe smoke in now missing local gun stores. I miss the big windows facing the street and the warped hard wood floors.
I miss the ancient looking woods around coves on lakes which now are all somebodies back yard, and they would freak out if you just carried a canoe across their land to put it in on the other side of Indian Carry.
Also, it seems like the NH landscape with certain tree types is changing due to temperatures being much warmer compared to the past. Before, you would have birch, beech, or pine that would grow in a clearing. Now, it is more likely knotweed or oak- particularly near roads.
It began with the opening of the Erie Canal.
Younger farmers moved out to Illinois/Ohio
It began with the wholesale moving/relocation of the factories and mills to the south for cheaper labor.
It began with the wholesale moving/relocation of the factories and mills to China.
It began with the construction of the Eisenhower Insterstate Highway System.
Farmland became suburbs.
It began with the killing of the railroads. Trucks were in now. Lots of trucks. Trucks required more new roads.
It began with the commercialization of farming. Del Monte, Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, and Cargill. The family farm all but disappeared.
It all began with the introduction of Walmart. Killed just about every downtown in America.
It all began with small but continuing changes in the tax code. The middle class is shrinking at a rapid rate. The number of poor is increasing at an alarming rate.
It all began with . . . . . . . . . .

Not sure if the tree thing is temp related or insect related, or both, but i agree things are changing and fast enough to see it happen.

I think it is more temp related. We are now approaching nearly two years worth of temperatures being above the long-term average every single month. The old averages don't seem to exist any more.
Well there is no doubt the temps are up and so are the bugs.. I see sick oaks and am almost sure that is due to bugs. And this year there are purple traps in the ash trees which i saw in upstate NY the year before, and am sure these are for bugs.
Last maple sugar season wasn't worth tapping a tree. I am not even going to bother to get more wood than i have which is about 1 cord left over from last time. I might tap a few trees enough to maybe burn up that last cord, and i guess i will be done makin' sugar.
I am not going to labor on a hunch, and the hunch is bad anyway.
Too many foreigners coming into our country is providing the housing growth which means less land and fields and more road rage - infiltration of cars ......I'm writing this many years after this initial post....to date...Sept 4, 2012-.... 74 vehicular/motorcycle deaths in NH.....never seen so many in it's lifetime......anyone have any suggestions to solve this? I do, but it's very biased so I'll keep it to myself
