Although I support consolidation in general, this specific plan kind of worries me cause I feel like it's just a way for the freeholders to make up for all the police and firemen Camden city is losing. In a regional system, many "county" officers would probably spend most of their time in Camden.
I personally think this is a positive move. Running all the independent departments is very expensive and creates a lot of redundency that isn't needed. Also, while the Camden "issue" is certainly part of it, as it is many of the nearby suburban forces both police and fire are already spending a disproportionate amount of time in Camden as it is responding to assistance calls. I know when I lived in Collingswood they had determined that in man hours about 1.5 policemen and 2 firemen were essentially being paid by Collingswood to help out Camden. I'm sure that holds true for Haddon Twp., Oaklyn, Pennsauken and Cherry Hill.

I guess those freeholders don't want to be re-elected. That will go over like a lead balloon. It's just a way to get the suburban taxpayers to pay for Camden.
As they well should, since it is part of their same county.
Maybe if countywide consolidation goes through, taxes will come down and we'll consider staying in NJ. Otherwise, peace out. On to greener (and less outrageously overpriced) pastures!
No, in NJ you get much less than what you pay for. They can't even properly clean and salt most of the roads around here (but at least they do a better job than Philly). Tell me why in places like Fairfax County VA or Montgomery County MD you pay half the taxes on a similar house but get better services overall. Down in Raleigh NC same deal. I am just speaking from experience. NJ taxes are outrageous and really drive people out.
yea?? I lived in Bucks and Philly in the 50 years i have been alive and NJ does BY FAR the best clearing street and trash removal and police services. Not even close.. You should live 5 years in Philly.. You will come back here running.. lol

this caught my eye. i'm not sure what you're talking about. as i type, children in Fairfax County have been out of school for *7* days because of the weather. They DO NOT know how to handle snow/ice, and quite frankly I'm shocked you think they do! They do NOT have the resources and equipment to handle the 2+ feet of snow they got around Christmas, the 5-6 inches of ice they got last week, plus any from yesterday!
snippets from emails from my friend in NoVA:
Supposed to get some ice/snow overnight. I hope these kids can get back to school!
Power appears to be out on just about every street in the neighborhood (except hers)
Girls are getting stir crazy. No school W-F and none M-T (this was last week)
Road and sidewalk clearing is a big challenge around here
oh and yea.. Don't bother calling the police in Philly if you get in a car accident anymore. Unless there are injuries, they don't come anymore.. New policy...

Eh I honestly feel like it is just that Maryland/NoVa still think they're in the South. Last year we had 10 days off (including 2 weekends) down here because they ran out of funds allocated for snow removal. So I would say in this case the service they provide isn't inferior because of lower taxes but because they just aren't used to and prepared for this type of weather (yet).
On the other hand, a county-wide school district means, obviously, that any decision affects the whole county. One of my friends down here is from western Howard County and said back in high school he got off school once in a while because it snowed in Columbia in eastern HoCo, even though it didn't even snow where he lived.
