We're getting ready to move to NJ from NC and here in NC we have to pay yearly property taxes on each of our cars (depending on the value of the car) as well as get them inspected each year. Is this the case in NJ?

Also, I heard there is no sales tax?

There is no property tax on cars in NJ, which is surprising since we are taxed to death on just about everything else. Cars need to be inspected every 2 years, and it's free of charge if you go to a state facility (you'll have to pay if you get the inspection done at a service station).

No tax on cars, but they have to be insured and NJ has the highest rates in the country.
No sales tax? That's Delaware. NJ has 7% sales tax.

Yes, but... that sales tax is not applicable on all items. To get a list of what is and is not taxed in NJ, I'd suggest downloading this PDF file from the Division of Taxation.

Hope this helps.

overall yes, but if you are a good driver, live in a good area (which the OP will be doing) and can get in with a good company, rates are very reasonable.

There is only a sales tax that is one time when you buy the car.

There is no property tax on cars in NJ. This is just one more pesky little tax NC has. There is no sales tax on clothes here in NJ.

There's also no tax on groceries in NJ..there may be some weird exemptions (that whole "prepared food or drink"???) but I think food in a grocery store is exempt, as opposed to buying a snapple at wawa.

The "prepared food" tax is a whole lotta BS if you ask me. Even at my local Shop Rite, if I select some items from their buffet table I get charged tax for it.

Registration fee's for your car is where you pay it. There are plenty of groceries taxed.
