Hoboken is one of the Abbott districts, and receives funding from the state to make up for shortfalls to the funding from tax revenue. In general, schools in the Abbott districts are poor performers, and the schools in Hoboken get rankings ranging from 2 to 7 on greatschools.net.
Most folks who live in Hoboken either don't have kids, or if they do and they care about their education, they send them to private schools.
Anyone familiar with this area and know what the good schools are in the area? Thanks.

Hoboken Charter and Elysian Charter (they are ok, not great)
Private schools within reasonable driving distance are Dwight Englewood and Montclair Kimberly Academy.
There is also a spanish emersion school called Hola. It is new so it is too soon to tell if it is good or not. The founders seem dedicated and it is and interesting idea. It is run by the city.
If you are having kids, its probably time to think about moving on from Hoboken - unless you are going to send your kids to private school.
How much are you going to enjoy the lifestyle of Hoboken's once you have kids? (not that you can't, just envision it.) You can always visit.
Are you seriously giving life advice to someone asking for school recommendations?The uptown area of Hoboken is Stroller City and more and more families are choosing to stay in the town post kids. Just because you have a family doesn't mean you have to abandon the convenience and richness of more urban living and Hoboken has a lot to offer. As more and more families stay in Hoboken the schools will get better. After all its only been 15 years since Hoboken really began it's gentrification process.

I live in Hoboken with a school age kid and it is great. Hoboken isn't only about partying. There are good sports programs, concerts in the parks, movies under the stars etc. Not to mention the proximity to the city for all the cultural activities. We love living here with a kid. We have done the suburbs, this is a much better fit for us.

I thought 7 was a good "mark" on Greatschools.org Even schools in Park Slope don't get any higher...
7 is good on GreatSchools, but he is saying that is the abs. top, when places like Bridgewater, Manalapan, Marlboro etc. all range from 5-10, the range is just higher in those places.
If you want your kids to have a GREAT public school education, Hoboken isn't the place to go.
And schools in Park Slope getting only 7's doesn't surprise me either- when was Park Slope touted as having a great school system?
I ALWAYS hear about Park Slope's "great public schools", but now that I see the grades on greatschools, I'm not that impressed.
