I personally don't think it's the type of housing stock that would attract a gentrifying crowd. It's just my opinion, and I feel my opinion holds some power because I was myself a part of JC's resurgence.
Indeed, but JC's historic achictecture is but one part of a whole. IE, those enormous modern condominium high-rises that sprouted up all along the waterfront.

Agreed. The only really "nice" area of JC as far as architecture is Van Vorst Park. Lincoln Park area has some nice Victorians but not really my taste. The water front of JC really isnt unique other than the brownstones.
I still believe that Newark has the potential to be a great city, however a great deal of gentrification would have to take place to lure the middle and upper-middle class and any such effort would come under great resistance.
My family lived in Newark until just after the riots and I remember my grandmother talking about the wonderful downtown shops, clubs and restaurants. There was no need to go to NYC because the had everything they could want right in their backyard.
I don't see why it couldn't be the next Hoboken or Jersey City if they cleaned up the crime and got rid of all the corrupt politicians.
1. This make my blood boil. I go to university in Newark, and see the raw potential every day. There is SOO much that could be done with that city I could right a book. People need to start taking care of themselves and learning to care about their community. This is no way to live, this is crazy.
2. I HATE the term "reverse racism". "Reverse racism" is when someone likes another race, and hates their own. Racism is racism regardless if it's Whites hating Blacks, Blacks hating Whites, Hispanics hating Asians, or any other combination.
3. Technically, those people who call those of us who want to fix Newark, and GO BACK to Newark, are the outsiders. The people who left that city and want to came back are from Newark and there's no changing that.
4. People need to start caring about Newark and the MASSIVE amount of corruption. I look at Newark, Camden, Atlantic City, and Trenton and want to weep. They're places where laziness is bred and encouraged and greed is praised. Places where crime is considered the right thing to do and someone who lives an honest life is a "snitch" and is unwanted. They have soooooooo much potential I can't take it.
I'm just curious about how the whining in the OP helps things. If it were my city in trouble or danger, I'd do something about it other than whine on the internet.
I think I did tell how to fix it but the political machine fueled by a mass amount of poor people keep the same council men in power with agendas to keep handing out cash to the poor and giving false promises and free turkeys on thanksgiving.. you would know how councilman work eh?
Well that's non too surprising lol, but what I thought was surprising was Phoenix. Wasn't it one of the fastest growing cities as recently as 2-3 years ago? Additionally, it talks about Newark, but then is quick to mention the state of NJ's superfund sites?

Relating to the wire on HBO, one city councilman was a corrupt guy almost went to jail. He didnt because he claimed he was a benefactor to the community always giving the poor money etc basically he was corrupt but won in court. The should make a version of the wire in Newark it would be the same stuff as Baltimore
