Try Princeton Airporter. They will pick you up, drive you to a car rental agency in Princeton or to your residence. It's expensive, but the hassle and fees of renting a car at the airport are ridiculous. Use a local agency for car rentals. Someone at Princeton University should be able to help you; student services maybe?

It is somewhat expensive but they have several drops in Princeton and I think it would be cheaper/more expeditious than renting a car and incurring a possible drop off fee. Not to mention the "getting lost" factor.

And it sure beats the hell out of schlepping your baggage on public transport
