- Carolina coast? California coast?
- Shenandoah Valley?

I would go south, where they don't murder you with property taxes. Maybe NC or SC. Perhaps Florida.

I think I'd have to stay pretty close to NJ if I left - maybe PA?

I like the seasons, the beaches, the Boardwalk and being near so many things to do in NJ, Philadelphia, NYC.

We have friends that relocated to the Williamsburg, VA area and say that they love it - so that is one area I'd like to explore.

I don't see what the attraction is to NC. I've been there many times and there is nothing particularly impressive about it. For the most part it's basically just suburban sprawl, and the weather is not much better than what we have in NJ.

I would move to south Florida. I want a place where I can enjoy the outdoors (beach/pool) year round. I love heat and humidity.

Is raising my family the only thing I'm doing or do I still need a career and a job? Because both of those things strongly influence where I can work and thus, raise a family.

Good questions, jaymoney. I was thinking of evaluating states purely on what they had to offer, sans job requirements. So I guess look at it as if your current job could transfer with you.

Ansky - I agree about NC. While many good aspects, also kind of overrated, I feel. Very flat and monotonous between the coast and the mountains.

Another place I like lately is the Hudson Valley small towns - but on the colder side.

People rave about Austin, Texas for their arts and culture, nightlife.

I like the pace of the Midwest, but not the geography.

Instead, they just murder you...

South Carolina ranks as 6th in the US in the rate of murders per 100,000 people.
By comparison, NJ ranks 22 on that list.

The other states that you mentioned are not too bad (FL=#16 and NC=#18), but the bottom line is that the incidence of violent crimes is higher in the states that you mentioned, in comparison with NJ, and SC is especially violent.

Do you know what halfbacks are? Those who moved to Fl only to find out that everybody else did and it's more crowded than NJ so they moved halfway back to NJ and settled in NC where the weather is not a brutal as NJ winters.

Nothing is nicer than NJ in the spring and fall in rural Somerset, Hunterdon counties but NC has those seasons and Fl not so much.
