I am relocating to New Jersey in October. My wife's car (4 door sedan)has 35% window tint on the front doors, 35% at the top of the windshield (about 5" strip), 20% on the back doors, and 20% on the back window. Although the front windows are not black, it is obvious they are tinted. This is legal in Missouri, but from my research I believe the front windows and windshield violate NJ law. This is a temporary relocation (about 2-3 years) so we will maintain our Missouri tags. Can she be ticketed for the tint? Any idea what kind of ticket she would receive?
It's not a ticket that carries any points or anything like that, but be prepared to become a target for law enforcement. It's an easy stop to make and New Jersey is notorious for enforcing the tint regulations to the extreme.
Just remove it before you move here, even if you are keeping the tags. Whether you get a ticket or not, you're essentially painting a bullseye on your car and asking to get pulled over. It's not worth the headaches.
A NJ police officer cannot enforce violations such as window tint on a vehicle that has out-of-state tags. However, I believe NJ law states that if you plan to stay for longer than 6 months you must register the vehicle in NJ. Therefore, you would be good to go with the tint as long as the car has Missouri tags. If you stay for a few years and register the car in NJ you would have to remove any tint from the front windows and windshield. You are allowed to have the back windows tinted.
Thanks for the information. I did not think they could ticket me since I do not have NJ tags. However I was concerned with making the car an easy target for random stops by the NJ police. I am trying to avoid registering in NJ since my residency will remain out of state. Guess I will think on it and maybe just take my chances, but if they hassle us maybe we should just give in and remove the tint. These tint laws still do not make sense to me, I personally think my visibility is better with the front windows tinted since the sun is not in my eyes.

It has to do with safety for officers when pulling a car over..they need to be able to see into the front seats

This could possibly be considered insurance fraud.

How could maintaining my car registration at my permanant residence be considered insurance fraud? I am being temporarily assigned to a project in the area and living in company provided housing. It could last 2-3 years or more, or I could be there for 1 month. According to Missouri law my car will require a state inspection within 10 days of returning to the state if I renew my plates while out of the area.
No I am not military. The company I will work for is not based in NJ, the temporary project is. I guess I should look into the issues, it may be easier to transfer my plates to NJ. Can I transfer my plates to NJ while still maintaining my residency in Missouri? I cannot change my residency from Missouri without significant changes to other items - such as mortgage, home insurance, etc. If all else fails maybe my wife and I should change our residency to NJ, but since she will be staying in Missouri for at least 1 week per month and the car is in her name I do not see why we would need to change. Plus will her return to our Missouri residence cause problems if we are NJ residents? The simplest way I can put this is the NJ residence, provided by my employer, will be our second and temporary home.
