I just this morning toured one of the local elementary public schools and got the chance to ask a lot of questions of a kindergarten and first grade teacher. They use Scott Foreman math, Sitton Spelling, Lit Life, (all of which I'll now learn more about) and Readers and Writers Workshop (which I like). I was more impressed than I expected to be (and much more than when I visited two other elementary schools in the same district) -- maybe because of the specific teachers I met. So maybe we'll try it...
That's great! Sounds like some good stuff. Yeah, give it a try. You can always switch to something else if you need to, kids are pretty resilient when they are young. Just go in with an open mind. You never know either, even though we have our own ideas, it's so dependent on your kids. It might be just the right fit for your kids, kwim?
Come look at the Montclair Cooperative School. It's small, progressive, nursery-8th grade, and a lovely place to have your children learn and grow. Your family will be part of your child's educational experience and you will find a great community here!
i love tests. thats when you get to show whether or not you can accomplish a goal. i always enjoyed taking tests, made me feel like we have reached a moment where i can demonstrate what im capable of learning.

Annsouth, we live in Hoboken and are going through the same dilemma as you for our son who will start Kindergarten in 2012. Wondering if you could share where your child is now and how is your experience going? Thanks
