clearly we arent spending enough money over there! send newark 100 billion for their schools immediately! that will guarantee all newark school children will turn into geniuses!
I just picked one school, but Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark spends $17,000 per year per student. Still, over 50% of the students aren't proficient in Language Arts, and over 78% aren't proficient at Math.
Jersey Man, what is the right amount? I'm seriously asking. Clearly, you think 17K is too low. 20K per student? 30K? 50K?

mega rich CEO's have found a way to take most of that 17k per student and use it to give jobs to people in other countries.
I think its seriously time to think about getting rid of public schools. Blasphemy? Unthinkable? Undoable? Maybe not. The government does most things poorly. And as we see, schools are no exception. Imagine a world where everyone pays for their own kids to be educated, and the schools compete with each other like businesses to provide the best education.

I'm imagining it. And beginning to like it.
i think one positive that you have is that when people pay for something, they value it more. so it may encourage some parents to get more involved in their children's education.
I'm guessing since billions of dollars and decades of adding teachers and building schools didn't do anything to improve grades or success, laying off 400 won't do anything to drive down grades of success. Honestly, you're better off measuring the schools in Newark by how many graduates end up in jail than by grades or SAT scores.
If it was up to me I wouldn't send them a dime. The local homeowners and businesses should anty up. Facebook gave a 100 million so when is my rebates coming in for my properties.

Some of you need to pay attention instead of assuming things.
First, there's a DECLINE in enrollment. Why shouldn't they lay off teachers? And most of those on the chopping block are admins, clerks and the like. Besides, it's not an employment agency, and they have more dead weight than you think.
Secondly, the Facebook donation went to/is going to a nonprofit.
