Assuming I need to be at work by 7:30/8:00 and leave by 5:30/6:00, what will my commute be like from Montclair to Englewood Cliffs (driving)?

Would Clifton to Englewood Cliffs be noticeably shorter?

We currently live in Weehawken, but the traffic and congestion are a little much. We have a 2 year old daughter and are looking for a more suburban, family-friendly area, and Montclair seems to fit the bill. We are renters and would like to spend not much more than $1,600 for a 2 bedroom apartment.

The wife commutes to Iselin so we can't go too far north, but would appreciate any other recommendations you can give.

Thanks so much!

Evil demon racist censor Google maps quotes three differnt ways at about 32 to 33 minutes each and doesn't mention much about traffic delays. Often traffic backs up going into the Gee Dub (GWB).

Thanks for the reply. Traffic is my main concern. Commuting from Weehawken, I do run into the GWB traffic, and I'm concerned that it may be more pronounced coming from the Montclair/Clifton area.

Can anyone else offer an opinion on the commute length from Montclair? Is 45 minutes reasonable, or laughable? TIA.

If you leave at 5:30, you could be in Stamford by 7:30. As you mentioned though, it's basically Bridge Traffic, so some days are going to be a crap shoot. Clifton will save you about 10min. depending where you end up. How about Bloomfield near Watchung Ave.? Hop on the GSP real quick. maybe take rt 4 if 80 is bad, but you know this already. $1,600 for a 2BR is def. doable here.

I made that commute for a few years. It takes about 40 minutes in rush hour. Best bet is to not go to the last exit in NJ where the 9W exit is right by the bridge-- avoid all of that and get off 80 before that at the Leonia/Englewood exit (I forget which number the exit is, but there are townhouses on the other side of the highway at that exit) and drive north to Palisades Ave., then up to 9W.

Montclair is a "happening" town with lots of media people and diversity. Clifton is more racially divided.
