The Highlands is closer to NYC than the other places you listed. From Highlands, you would take the Seastreak Ferry. I'm telling you, it's your best bet in that area. Nautical, not pretentious, things to do, places to eat and drink.
unfortunately the ferry is way too expensive for daily commuting. i'll have to research to check out express bus options from that area.

Yes, that's the bad part about the ferry. Only for those with fatter salaries. It's more than twice my monthly train ticket.
There was an article in the APP yesterday about Keyport...some Keyport man in his 50's offered two 14-year-olds in a coffee shop $300 to go into the woods and watch him do a striptease. The kids called a parent, who called a cop. He was arrested.
Not that this necessarily reflects the makeup of the entire town, but I just thought I'd share the story.

And Keyport's police chief was recently demoted (or was it fired) for arrived intoxicated to the scene of a crime
My writing group meets at a cute little coffee shop on West Front Street in Keyport. I was there last night, and while a few shops and restaurants looked good, the town on the side streets does seem a little rundown and seedy, and as I was driving away from the coffee shop around 9 p.m., there were about 10 young guys sort of loitering at the sides of the street and in the street--the kind that didn't make haste to get out of the street when they saw a car coming and just sort of stared as I passed as if I'd intruded upon them or something.
What about Howell Township? Can anyone list pros and/or cons about Howell Township? Or, what about Brick?
We prefer a harbor community/town within a 15 minutes drive of fishing/beach/boardwalk areas.
We plan to retire in 4 to 6 years, and still work in NYC, so commuting is required (not parking since family would drop us off/pick us up).
Our home preference are ranch style/single-level homes, 2 BR, 1 Bath, $200,000 or less, with reasonable property taxes.
Thanks everyone :.)
The two people I know who live in Howell love it. I've met a few more casually (jury duty, family party) and they say the same. One commutes to work via bus, one drives (to JC).
