That one perplexed me, too. It's been awhile, but I had a part-time job in Dumont some years ago, and it was more like a Westwood or a Waldwick.

I was under impression Dumont or Demarest was richer than EC. Those town are right next to Alpine, which is one of richest in NJ.

I think Englewood Cliffs is pretty expensive. Demarest is upscale, but not Dumont, unless it has changed drastically.

I guess I mixed up Dumon with Demarest. Another wealthy town is Tenafly, richer than EC I would say. And a very large Jewish population in Tenafly/East Englewood area.

Brownstone's post was solid.

Only one not covered was Edgewater, which consists of a few streets under the palisades cliffs with a ton of luxury residential buildings, yuppie amenities (trader joes, whole food, mitsuwa, a really nice theater, etc.), and gorgeous views over the Hudson. Population is predominately white and Asian and high school students go to Leonia. Very nice town.

Overall the towns in the OP don't really make up a coherent area.

Dumont? Dumont is the least wealthy town in the Northern Valley (well, except Bergenfield, if it counts). Agree that Alpine is just obscene. Englewood Cliffs and Tenafly are not that different, both very wealthy but not quite Alpine-level. (Census Bureau estimates say Tenafly MHI is $125k against $101k in Englewood Cliffs, compared to $172k in Alpine.) Property in Tenafly is way more expensive, though, due to school districts. The wealthy parts of Englewood are wealthier even than Alpine but then there are genuinely poor parts of Englewood, too.

Thanks Grew up on the west side of Englewood, took the 166 a million times to and from NYC, now recently moved to Jersey City from Manhattan, so this is all pretty ingrained local knowledge.
